Which one fits your daily needs?

Start with your normal weekday mileage, not the occasional road trip. Road trips rely more on public fast-charging access and route planning. Your home setup should comfortably replace the energy used on an ordinary day, with room for a cold week or a missed charging night.

  1. Estimate daily miles. Use a two-week average if possible. Include school runs, errands, and commute distance.
  2. Check overnight parking time. Ten or more hours makes Level 1 more realistic. A short overnight window favors Level 2.
  3. Allow for winter. EV efficiency often drops in cold conditions, so avoid choosing equipment based only on ideal summer consumption.
  4. Look at battery size. A larger battery does not always need Level 2, but it takes much longer to recover after a deep discharge on Level 1.
  5. Decide how much flexibility matters. If the car must be ready every morning, Level 2 is usually the less frustrating option.

A practical threshold is this: if you drive under roughly 30 miles most days and reliably park overnight for 12 hours or more, Level 1 may cover your needs. If you commonly drive 40 miles or more, have a larger EV battery, or cannot tolerate waiting a day or two after a busy weekend, Level 2 is generally the better match. Your actual vehicle efficiency can shift those numbers.

Installation and cost considerations

Level 1 has the lower upfront cost because the outlet may already exist. However, a dedicated outlet inspected for continuous use is wiser than treating any garage receptacle as automatically suitable. If charging causes warmth at the plug, discoloration, tripped breakers, or an intermittent connection, stop using that setup and have it checked.

Level 2 costs more because the electrical work is often the biggest part. A licensed electrician should assess panel capacity, wire run length, breaker size, grounding, local permit requirements, and the charging unit’s continuous load rating. A 50-amp circuit, for example, is commonly limited to 40 amps of continuous charging load. Hardwired units can be a cleaner option for higher-output setups, but the right choice depends on the house and the car.

Electricity use is mostly about the miles

Level 2 does not automatically make electricity more expensive per mile. The car needs roughly the same battery energy to cover the same trip. Charging losses vary with equipment and conditions, but your electricity rate and total energy drawn from the wall determine the bill.

For a quick estimate, suppose your vehicle needs 30 kWh from the wall to replace a day’s driving and your electricity rate is $0.15 per kWh. Multiply 30 by $0.15. That is about $4.50 for that recharge. If your utility offers time-of-use pricing, a Level 2 unit with scheduling can make it easier to charge during lower-priced overnight periods, provided that rate plan actually suits your household usage.

Pick Level 1 when slow, steady overnight recovery matches your real routine. Pick Level 2 when time matters. Neither is inherently better for the battery simply because of its level, and both are far slower than DC fast charging. Follow the vehicle manual, use listed equipment, and have any new circuit installed or inspected by a qualified electrical professional.
